Atticus’s Odyssey: Reincarnated Into A Playground
Chapter 1184 - 1184: TalkativeWhile the surviving people of the alliance wept, Atticus’ gaze remained locked onto the spot where the Spirit King had vanished.
‘I didn’t see this coming.’
It went without saying, the Spirit King had completely blindsided him. His focus had been solely on Whisker’s siblings, and in doing so, he had practically forgotten about a far greater threat lurking in the shadows.
‘If not for Ozeroth… and Zoey, he might have succeeded.’
Atticus still had no clue what exactly the purple haired girl had done, but one thing was clear, he hadn’t been here. And if it weren’t for them, Eldoralth would’ve been reduced to ash.
‘He’s always watching.’
Atticus turned his gaze to the skies. The only reason the Spirit King had been able to strike at the perfect moment was because he was always watching Eldoralth.
‘Is it because of the presence of spirits? Or the abundance of spiritual energy?’
More than a century of quiet planning had allowed the Spirit King to saturate the world with spiritual energy.
In truth, the power they used wasn’t just energy, it was his Will. Atticus still remembered the feeling when his own Will had engulfed half of Eldoralth. He could feel everything, faintly. With just a single thought, he could see anything.
If the Spirit King had that kind of dominion over Eldoralth…
‘I don’t like it.’
He had to put an end to it, fast.
His figure burst into light, and in the next instant, Ozeroth and Noctis shot out in front of him. The latter had returned to his small and furry form.
With eyes that gleamed like twin suns, he leapt onto Atticus’ head, his excited voice ringing out.
“Dada! Dada!”
Noctis slobbered all over Atticus’ face, licking enthusiastically.
Though they’d only been apart for under an hour, it had felt like an eternity to the little guy.
“Urgh, Noctis.”
Atticus scrunched his face in mild disgust, but didn’t pull away. He let the excited beast have his fun. It was hard to stay annoyed at someone so innocent and happy.
After about a minute, once Noctis had thoroughly soaked every inch of his face, he finally pulled back. His wide eyes looked at the spit covered Atticus with an innocent expression, like he hadn’t just bathed him in saliva.
“Kuu!” Noctis lunged again, landing atop Atticus’ head and settling there like it was his new kingdom.
Atticus chuckled. Truth be told, after everything that had happened, the distraction was a welcome one.
He focused on the water element and cleaned the mess off his face, then turned to his purple spirit, who stood unusually quiet.
“You okay?” Atticus asked.
“…Yeah, sure.”
Ozeroth’s reply was heavy, like it carried more weight than he wanted to admit.
And as his bonded partner, there was no way Atticus wouldn’t notice.
‘He’s blocking access.’
He had just tried to tap into Ozeroth’s memories, only to be met with a wall.
‘It has to be the Spirit King.’
Atticus was certain. He could guess and make assumptions, sure, but there was no substitute for hearing it directly.
“You don’t seem okay, Ozeroth.”
Atticus didn’t bother sugar coating it.
“Bond,” Ozeroth said, turning to him with a forced smile. “I’m fine.”
Atticus stared back. “Since when does the ‘great’ Ozeroth lie? Don’t tell me you became a coward after fighting the Spirit King.”
At that moment, Ozeroth’s gaze could have cut steel. There was nothing he despised more than being called a coward.
“Take that back, Bond,” he warned, the air around him subtly trembling.
“You’re hiding something. Only a coward does that,” Atticus said calmly. “If you don’t want to be called one, stop acting like one.”
Ozeroth gritted his teeth and exhaled. Atticus was right.
‘What am I doing?’
He had been trying to piece together everything he’d just discovered. But instead of confronting it, he’d tried to keep it to himself. But Atticus was his bond, his partner. He was going to find out eventually. And hiding it because of his own fears…
That was cowardice.
Ozeroth gave a small nod and dropped the wall in his mind, letting Atticus see what he had seen.
A second later, Atticus hovered silently in the sky, staring down at the gaping, kilometers wide hole the Spirit King had left behind.
His eyes widened, disbelief flooding his expression.
Only one word slipped from his lips.
“Damn.”
…
“Hm?”
Whisker’s eyes narrowed at the horizon where he felt a strong presence approaching.
But the moment he sensed the heavy aura, he relaxed.
‘It’s been a long day.’
Whisker released a heavy sigh. After everything he had been through, his nerves were more tense than usual.
‘I should get a massage after this. I deserve it.’
As the figure approached, Whisker quickly stashed the popcorn he’d been munching on, as if he didn’t want to be caught with it, and flashed a grin.
“As amazing as always,” he said.
“Do you ever lose that smile?”
Atticus appeared in front of him, gazing at Whisker with a frown. “Or do you just find everything amusing?”
“Aww, my star actor, I thought you loved my charming smile?” Whisker’s grin widened.
“It freaks me out. You smile at literally everything.”
“That’s because everything is fun. Plus, that’s rich coming from the same guy who smiled like a maniac while fighting the twins.”
Whisker was referring to the battle between Atticus and the twins of Bloom and Blight. Atticus’ decision to smile mid fight had shocked even him, but that shock had quickly turned to excitement.
His star actor was a maniac! And what could be better than that?
“That was different,” Atticus said flatly.
“Was it?” Whisker raised a brow. “If there was ever an award for worst timing to smile, I’m pretty sure you’d be the winner, my star actor.”
“And I’m pretty sure the event would be hosted in your honor,” Atticus shot back.
Whisker chuckled. “Oh? Getting snarky now? Looks like awakening your true Will did a number on you. You’re unusually talkative.”
