Chapter 2152 – Strange Movements
Su Yi lay in the wooden wheelchair, unable to move.
He watched as Xue Feng’s fist drew near, perfectly calm and silent, without the slightest ripple of emotion.
“Stop!”
Someone appeared out of nowhere and sent Xue Feng flying with a palm strike.
Thud!
Xue Feng landed several dozen feet away, his face smeared with dirt.
“What are you doing, elder?” Xue Feng looked up and, much to his surprise, discovered that it was Elder Li Changqing who’d stopped him.
Li Changqing pointed out of the courtyard and said expressionlessly, “Scram! And don’t come back until you understand what you’ve done wrong!”
Xue Feng’s expression shifted erratically. At first, he wanted to explain himself, but when he met Li Changqing’s terrifyingly intense gaze, his heart quivered, and he dared not hesitate. He immediately climbed to his feet and scurried off.
But not before taking one last opportunity to glare at Su Yi.
“My apologies. We’ve embarrassed ourselves,” sighed Li Changqing. He turned to face Su Yi, then clasped his fist in apology.
All Su Yi wanted to know was, “How is A’Ling doing?”
A month had passed. His wounds showed no sign of improvement, but at least he could speak normally again.
Li Changqing’s brow furrowed, and his face filled with undisguisable worry. “Terrible. She went into the Demon Crow Mountains to gather medicine today, and she entered one of the mountains’ forbidden zones, where she was bitten by a terrifying yao serpent. Its poison has already invaded her body, and her life force is rapidly flowing away.
“If things go on like this, her vitality will dry up within three days, and she’ll pass away.”
Su Yi, however, sighed in relief upon learning the full story. “There’s no such thing as an incurable poison.”
Li Changqing’s eyes lit up. “You can cure her?”
“Isn’t that exactly why you came looking for me?” whispered Su Yi.
Li Changqing was stunned. “You… you guessed that already?”
“I wasn’t sure at first,” said Su Yi. “But when you intervened and sent Xue Feng away, I was fairly certain that you were here to save A’Ling.”
Li Changqing’s eyes flashed, and he let out a deep sigh. “Just as I thought. You really are no ordinary person!”
“Others might not realize the severity of my injuries, but you examined me with the Little Star Soul Art,” said Su Yi. “You’re naturally well aware that anyone else with such injuries would have died a long time ago. It’s not at all strange that you’d reach a few conclusions based on that.”
The Little Star Soul Art!!
Li Changqing instantly looked stricken. He couldn’t help but exclaim, “You… You recognized my secret soul art?”
“I did,” said Su Yi. He gazed intently at Li Changqing for a moment, then said, “But let’s talk about that later. Bring A’Ling here first.”
Li Changqing took a deep breath, suppressed his inner turmoil and clasped his fist. “One moment, please.”
He turned and left. Su Yi watched him fade away, then gazed at the sky through the courtyard.
The darkness was setting in, and faint purple light appeared over the horizon. The ancient Demon Crow Mountains were shrouded in fog. It wouldn’t be long before night well and the Demon Flame Purple Moon hung over the sky once more.
His first night in Grassy Creek Village, A’Ling fed him the Kuilong Soulblood Pill that Elder Li Changqing had given him. This was a precious medicine by the village’s standards, so Su Yi instantly concluded that Li Changqing had figured something out. He wouldn’t have given him such a pill otherwise.
Li Changqing had an abundance of experience, and he knew how to keep his cool. He hadn’t discussed this with anyone else.
That meant that Su Yi had spent his month in Grassy Creek Village in peace. No one came to disturb him.
If A’Ling hadn’t been injured, Li Changqing most likely wouldn’t have come to see him again.
It wasn’t hard to guess why, either. His origins were suspicious, and Li Changqing wanted nothing to do with him!
However, Su Yi dared say with certainty that Li Changqing’s attitude toward him would change now that he’d recognized the Little Star Soul Art.
He just wasn’t sure whether it would change for the better or for the worse.
He didn’t have long to mull this over. Li Changqing quickly returned with A’Ling. Village Headman Xue Tianyun and Xue Feng were there, too.
A’Ling’s beautiful face was deathly pale, but there were dense patches of black floating beneath the surface of her skin. There was no disguising her pain or exhaustion, but she still stubbornly walked on her own. She refused to let anyone help her.
When she saw Su Yi, she forced herself to smile. “The elder says I’m fine. I just need to rest for a few days, so don’t worry, okay?”
Su Yi’s heart ached. He said to Li Changqing, “You can take the others and leave.”
Li Changqing nodded. “Then… I’ll leave A’Ling to you.”
Su Yi nodded back.
Suddenly, Village Headman Xue Tianyun bellowed, “Kneel!”
Xue Feng froze, completely gobsmacked. “Father, why are you making me kneel to him?”
Bang!
Xue Tianyun pressed his hand on Xue Feng’s shoulder and forced him to his knees in front of Su Yi.
Xue Feng’s face filled with agony and panic. He didn’t have to be a genius to realize that something had gone wrong!
“My son foolishly let his anger get the best of him, and he almost hurt you. I humbly request your understanding. Please, forgive my son just this once,” said Xue Tianyun, clasping his fist as if deeply ashamed.
Even A’Ling was unwittingly stunned. What’s going on here?
The kneeling Xue Feng was stunned too.
Su Yi, however, was used to such things. “I naturally wouldn’t take something so trivial to heart. Leave, and don’t disturb us any further.”
Xue Tianyun nodded hurriedly, then promptly led Xue Feng away.
Li Changqing left shortly after.
“What’s going on, Big Brother Xiao?” A’Ling asked in confusion.
Su Yi had told her that his name was Xiao Jian, and over the past month, she’d taken to calling him “Big Brother Xiao.”
“Xue Feng just barged in here to attack me, but the elder stopped him,” Su Yi explained warmly. “They came to apologize because they recognized that they’d erred.”
A’Ling only half believed it, but she was badly injured and her body was wracked with venom. She was too exhausted and agonized to ask any follow-up questions.
“It’s almost nightfall, Big Brother Xiao. I’ll bring you back to your room,” said A’Ling. She fought the pain back down, picked Su Yi up, and carried him into the room, practically stumbling on her feet.
Su Yi was a little frustrated. She was so badly injured, but she still insisted on carrying him. Anyone who saw this would likely curse him out for lacking in humanity.
But there was nothing he could do about it.
“Big Brother Xiao, I went into the mountains to pick a spirit fruit for you. It’s called a Hundred-Refinements Nineleaf Fruit. It’s extremely rare, and I’m sure it will help you,” said A’Ling.
She pulled a fiery-red, nine-leafed spirit fruit from her sleeves. It was only the size of an infant’s fist, but it was crystalline and resplendent, like a miniature lamp brimming with shocking spiritual energy.
“You got hurt trying to pick that spirit fruit?” Su Yi couldn’t help but ask.
A’Ling nodded.
Waves of emotion coursed through Su Yi’s heart, and he longed to tousle A’Ling’s hair. Over the past month, she’d paid far too heavy a price to tend to his wounds, and she was so kind that it made his heart ache.
“A’Ling.” Su Yi called her over. “I can treat the snake’s venom.”
“You can?” A’Ling exclaimed.
“That’s right,” said Su Yi. “Otherwise, how could the clan elder have sent you back?”
A’Ling still looked confused. “But you…”
Su Yi gently interrupted her. “I know you have questions, but let’s cure you first, okay?”
“I’m going to teach you a secret art. Commit it to memory, and if there’s anything you don’t understand, tell me and I’ll explain. Once you’ve mastered it, you’ll be able to neutralize the poison with ease.”
A’Ling nodded.
Night fell, and the purple moon rose. The familiar roaring of beasts resounded from the wilderness of the Demon Crow Mountains.
A’Ling, meanwhile, sat cross-legged in a stone room, illuminated by mottled lamplight. Her vital energy coursed through her, and silver mist rose around her like starlight.
Su Yi watched from his bed, inwardly nodding in approval. With A’Ling’s late-stage Spiritual Revolution Realm cultivation base, she’d be able to neutralize all of the snake venom within a week.
Meanwhile, beneath the same night sky.
Grassy Creek Village, the home of Elder Li Changqing.
“Elder, can you tell where that Xiao Jian guy came from?” Village Headman Xue Tianyun.
Li Changqing fell briefly silent, then said, “I can’t. All I can tell you is that he has a deep, unfathomable cultivation base, and…”
Li Changqing hesitated.
“And what?” pressed Xue Tianyun.
“It’s nothing.” Li Changqing shook his head. “Mere conjecture, that’s all. I’ll tell you once I’ve gotten a clear handle on the situation.”
Xue Tianyun was instantly irritable. “Don’t tantalize me! But alright, it’s about time I got going.”
He got up and left. Li Changqing remained seated and lost in thought, his face flickering in and out of view beneath the lamplight.
Finally, he let out a deep sigh. Why… would Xiao Jian recognize the Little Star Soul Art? Don’t tell me that… the blood of the Yi Family flows through his veins, too?
Five days later, A’Ling made a complete recovery.
This caused a commotion throughout Grassy Creek Village. Everyone was thrilled for her.
But A’Ling just said that it was the elder who’d saved her life, and that she’d be sure to repay him. She didn’t mention a single word of Su Yi’s contributions.
This was, of course, at Su Yi’s behest. He was an outsider, and he currently lacked even the strength to truss a chicken. If he revealed his extraordinary qualities, it would inevitably draw unwanted attention.
And that could potentially lead to trouble.
Su Yi was currently sunbathing in the courtyard, as had become his habit. He was like an old man in his twilight years, and he looked utterly serene.
Xue Feng came calling.
He placed a jug of wine beside Su Yi and smiled. “I’m here to visit you. Take this wine as an expression of my appreciation.”
Su Yi glanced at him. “You seem quite happy. Why?”
Xue Feng laughed. “You’ll find out soon enough.”
With that, he turned and left.
Su Yi watched him leave. His brow furrowed. There’s… something not quite right about that kid.
But Su Yi quickly set the matter aside. Xue Feng was just some kid who’d only recently broken into the Profound Dao. He wasn’t worthy of Su Yi’s concern.
That night.
The skies were as dark as ink, and the purple moon hung overhead.
A’Ling was tending to Su Yi when a thunderous boom went off. The ground quivered, the mountains shook, and the stone hut swayed violently.
Su Yi looked and saw a strange, heart-palpitating scene through the open window.
