Chapter 768
Bear-san, Meeting People
The crater in the ground looked like a large footprint.
But it was not good to jump to conclusions. It might just be a coincidence.
But that part certainly looked like three fingers.
“Kagali-san, is this…” (Yuna)
“I’m not sure. It might just be a coincidence.” (Kagali)
I’d like to think so too.
“But I don’t think so.” (Kagali)
That was why she had me see it from a higher vantage point.
“The surrounding buildings have collapsed. The ground was probably cratered in due to the weight. I don’t want to imagine what happened after.” (Kagali)
There were no signs of the creature moving around or digging underground.
In other words, we could only conclude that a large creature probably came down from above.
And the ground caved due to its weight where it landed.
Looking at the surrounding buildings and roads, there was no sign of movement.
In other words, it must have flown upwards after diving down.
I was not as knowledgeable as Kagali-san, but I certainly didn’t want to think about the creature that did this.
“I’m going to check the surroundings.” (Kagali)
Kagali-san’s body floated up and went to check the surroundings.
I also returned to the ground and moved over the sunken area while being careful of my surroundings.
Then I searched for clues, but I couldn’t find anything that would tell me what happened here.
As I searched my surroundings, Kagali-san, who had been flying in the sky, returned.
“Did you find anything?” (Yuna)
“Well, at least there are no signs of battle. If there were signs of fighting or attempts to drive the creature away, there would have been bodies or weapons lying around.” (Kagali)
Indeed, there were no bodies lying around, and no weapons either.
I was looking for traces of the monster, but Kagali-san was looking from a different perspective.
As expected, she noticed things differently.
“Since there are no other traces of a battle, then there are two possibilities: There was nothing people could have done. Or, the creature only landed for a moment and left.” (Kagali)
It may have landed on the ground, but then flew off immediately.
If that’s the case, it made sense why there was no damage elsewhere.
“Since it landed here. Do you think that it was looking for something nearby?” (Yuna)
“I can’t say for sure that what it was looking for is here. Since it did fly to the sky after, what it was looking for might have already been lost.” (Kagali)
“Right.” (Yuna)
“Besides, if that creature was nearby, your bears would have reacted, right?” (Kagali)
Swaying Bear and Hugging Bear haven’t reacted. My detection skill had not found anything strange either.
“But I can’t say that there’s no danger. I recommend that we pretend that we didn’t see anything this time and go home.” (Kagali)
I could understand what Kagali-san was saying.
It’s true that there was no longer any point in knowing what happened here as everyone seemed to have died already.
On the contrary, staying here would likely put us in danger.
Since there was no further reaction from the [Bear Signpost], I think the only option we had for now was to retreat.
All I was worried about was why [Bear Signpost] reacted when it had never reacted before.
Well, what should I do? But in my heart, I have already made up my mind.
“I’ll investigate a bit more.” (Yuna)
I have the Bear Transfer Gate, so we could always escape.
As I said yesterday, I was curious about this frozen town.
Also, leaving the mystery unsolved made me feel uneasy and uncomfortable.
“If we encounter any danger, we’ll run away.” (Kagali)
Apparently, Kagali would stay with me until she encounters any danger.
Kagali-san was a kind soul, no matter how much she denied it.
“What are you laughing at?” (Kagali)
“When that happens, I’ll set up the Gate right away to escape with you.” (Yuna)
We resumed our exploration.
All the houses were frozen.
I think there were definitely people frozen inside.
“But we won’t get any information if we just keep walking around like this. I saw a big house up ahead. I think it’s frozen like the guild, but there might be more information there than if we investigate a small house.” (Kagali)
We decided to head to the house, relying on the information Kagali-san saw from the sky.
As I walked, checking my surroundings, we found ourselves in a particularly large house.
It was a mansion surrounded by walls. It looked like the home of a noble.
The garden visible through the gaps in the iron gate was large.
“I suppose this is the home of an important person.” (Yuna)
“Yeah, as you would expect someone living in such a big house.” (Kagali)
Kagali-san and I jumped over the fence and entered the grounds.
The garden that was supposed to be beautiful was frozen.
Well, even the frozen scenery was beautiful.
But it was quiet, and it was scary to think of people frozen inside the house.
We came to the front door of the house.
Kagali-san melted the ice on the door with fire magic.
The door was locked, so I felt bad, but I used wind magic to break the lock and entered the mansion.
The inside of the mansion was frozen like the other houses.
“Where do we want to check first?” (Kagali)
“I don’t know the layout, so we’ll just have to look around randomly.” (Yuna)
We decided to check from the first floor.
After walking around a few rooms, we found the servants huddled together in a room with a fireplace.
No matter how many times I saw it, it made me sad and I felt indescribable.
Then I discovered the basement, but it was a place to store food. The storage was also frozen.
“It seems like checking the first floor and underground is not enough.” (Yuna)
I went up the stairs and moved to the room at the back.
In that room, people who seemed to be the family of this house were wrapped in blankets in front of the fireplace.
It appeared that commoners and nobles had the same thoughts.
Everyone ended up with their family.
I didn’t search for anything next to the sleeping family. I left the room and moved to another room.
I found a place that seemed to be an office. Next, I melted the ice on the door and entered the room.
Everything was frozen, but there was no one there.
I felt a little relieved.
I felt reluctant to look for things in front of frozen people.
I couldn’t imagine how cold it must have been to freeze inside the house.
“It’s no good.” (Yuna)
“Yeah.” (Kagali)
We both searched for clues but couldn’t find any.
We also checked the other rooms, but they were all the same.
And so, today’s exploration came to an end, and we returned to check on the door of the Adventurer’s Guild.
We found the door once again frozen in ice.
It did seem to freeze over time, as if the ice ‘restored’ itself.
With nothing more to do, I set up my Bear House in the middle of the road, just like yesterday, and decided to rest.
“Kagali-san, what’s wrong?” (Yuna)
After returning to the Bear House, I asked Kagali-san, who had her mouth closed.
“Well, I was just remembering the giant serpent.” (Kagali)
“Giant serpent?” (Yuna)
“That giant serpent appeared out of nowhere. It frightened people, and many people died. I do find the situation in this town similar.” (Kagali)
“So you think it was the work of a powerful monster, then.” (Yuna)
“I can’t think of anything else.” (Kagali)
“But it may also be frozen by a magic circle made by someone.” (Yuna)
“That is also a good possibility. But looking at that crater… No, is it possible that the monster was attracted by the ice that was created by the magic circle and further amplified it with magic power?” (Kagali)
I see, that could also be a possibility, having a monster get drawn in by a magic circle.
Just like how the 10,000 monsters brought in the royal capital. There were monsters that attracted other monsters, like when the giant serpent was about to be resurrected. So there were many ways to attract monsters.
“It’s just my imagination. I don’t know what’s right. You shouldn’t make assumptions either. Otherwise, you won’t be able to find the answer.” (Kagali)
There were many things that were different from what we could assume based on preconceived notions.
If we took action based on the wrong assumption, it could take a long time for us to get back on the right track.
“Yeah, I’ll be careful.” (Yuna)
There were various possibilities: man-made, monsters, or a natural disaster.
However, it appeared that monsters were the most likely involved, next would be man-made causes, and the last possibility would be a natural disaster.
It was easier to think about this with someone than thinking about it on my own.
I was glad Kagali-san was with me.
Then, the next morning.
“Kuuuu”
The paw pad pressed against my face.
“Kuuu”
Pat, pat, pat, pat, pat. The paw pad slapped my face.
It looked like either Swaying Bear or Hugging bear was trying to wake me up.
“Is it morning already?” (Yuna)
I opened my eyes and saw the paw of a white bear.
It looked like it was Hugging Bear who was trying to wake me up.
I rubbed my eyes.
I was speaking with Kagali-san until late last night, so I was still a little sleepy.
“Stop it,” Kagali-san shouted.
Looking towards Kagali-san, Swaying Bear was trying to wake her up. But Kagali-san attempted to brush him off.
But Swaying Bear wasn’t giving in.
His hand which was slapping Kagali-san’s face got faster.
“Can’t you wake me up a little more gently?” (Kagali)
Giving up, Kagali-san got up.
Swaying Bear left Kagali-san and looked out the window with Hugging Bear.
“Kuun.”
Could it be!
I immediately used my detection skills.
There were two reactions from people.
And they were close.
“Kagali-san, there are two people near the house. Swaying Bear and Hugging Bear told me about it.” (Yuna)
“Is that so?” (Kagali)
Swaying Bear nodded.
“I’m sorry about that.” (Kagali)
Kagali-san apologized and patted Swaying Bear’s head.
“Thank you for letting me know, Hugging Bear.” (Yuna)
I stroked Hugging Bear’s head.
“So, what are we going to do?” (Kagali)
“Are they friends or foe…” (Yuna)
Depending on that, how we should respond would change.
“Well, with only you and me here, even if they become antagonistic, it should be fine.” (Kagali)
“Kuuuuh.”
“That’s right. These two are here as well.” (Yuna)
Me, Kagali-san, Swaying Bear and Hugging Bear. There were only two targets.
As long as the person was not a Demon King or something, I think it would be fine.
“Well then, let’s go and see them.” (Yuna)
“That’s right. But first, I need to get changed.” (Kagali)
Kagali-san changed from her nightgown into her usual Japanese clothes.
I slept wearing Black Bear just in case something happened, so I didn’t need to change.
I waited for Kagali-san to get changed and moved to the first floor.
“Do you know where they are?” (Kagali)
“In front, on the right side.” (Yuna)
I slowly opened the door.
“Over there.” (Yuna)
Kagali-san looked in the direction I said.
I used my detection skill to check. There was a building and a fence in that direction.
Were they behind that fence?
“Um, I know you are behind that fence. I won’t attack you, so can you come out?” (Yuna)
I called out politely.
I didn’t say “come out” in a commanding tone.
That would be like starting a fight from the start, and the other person might get scared and run away.
“Are you sure you’re not going to do anything?” (???)
It was a man’s voice.
“I won’t.” (Yuna)
I didn’t know if my words reassured him, but the man looked at us as if peeking through the gap in the fence.
“Those bears behind you might come and attack us.” (???)
I turned around.
There stood Swaying Bear and Hugging Bear.
“These kids won’t attack. But if you attack us, we’ll fight back.” (Yuna)
“…” (???)
I could hear whispers from behind the wall.
It seemed like he was talking to another person.
“Okay, I’ll come over there. But don’t attack us.” (???)
“I promise.” (Yuna)
As I said so, a man in his late 30s and a girl around 15 years old came out from behind the wall.
