Reincarnation of the Strongest Healer
Chapter 988: Descent Of The DemonessChapter 988: Descent Of The Demoness
The crowd went silent when Carmen suddenly declared to choose Derek as her opponent.
They wanted to complain but halted themselves.
Unlike Carmen’s ignorance, the rest knew about Derek’s capability. To confront Derek was equivalent to courting death.
However, little did these people know that Carmen wasn’t ignorant. She wasn’t arrogant either. Arrogant was a term meant for those who talked big but had no skills to back it up.
Instead, Carmen was truly confident in herself to defeat Derek.
And if she happened to lose, then that would be it. To be inferior meant she had more to learn and that 2,000 points would serve as a constant reminder of the incident.
In hindsight, no matter the outcome, she was bound to transform into a new person.
"A-Are you really sure you want to pick me?" Derek raised an eyebrow and inquired. "I don’t have many points on me, so 2,000 is a little bit too much."
Seeing how Derek was still acting in his ridiculous role, Carmen lost her patience.
"If you don’t want to fight, then I’ll just leave." She threatened and was about to turn around to leave.
Sure enough, Derek’s eyelids twitched slightly as he hurriedly called out, "Wait, I’ll do it."
To reinforce his acting, he made sure to clench his jaw and hand, almost as if he was very unwilling to agree to the battle.
Nevertheless, Carmen’s eyes seemed to be able to pierce through his true inner thoughts, which she imagined him to be dancing and laughing sinisterly.
’I only have 3,500 points. Winning 2,000 will boost me to 5,500.’ She initially wanted to bet 3,000 or all her points. But then she came to a halt. The points she received might be far above average. If that was the case, then her decision to bet 3,000 or more might backfire.
These people weren’t fools to think the points were going to be in their pocket. Instead, they would become wary and outright refuse to battle her in the arena if they learned how many points she got.
"We should register and finalize it," Carmen said, clearly unwilling to give Derek a chance to back down.
"Sure," Derek readily agreed.
Soon, the two of them approached an employee and paid in advance.
"The battle arena has been set. Do the two of you agree with the modification?" The employee asked.
"No problem on my side." Derek waved it off.
Meanwhile, Carmen took a few glances and confirmed that the battle arena had been set to level 45 and skills limited to Tier 1. External or outside items were also banned, including recovery potions.
"I agree with it," she said lightly.
Nodding, the employee proceeded to have the two enter the arena stage.
"The points would be automatically allocated to the winner. There will be no complaints allowed, so if a commotion does break out. I’m sure I won’t need to emphasize how powerful the law enforcement is in Resonance City, right?"
Carmen and Derek stayed silent. It was a necessary protocol for the employee to warn and ensure the participants were clear of the rules.
This way, it could prevent a lot of trouble such as the defeated participant crying foul or complaining.
With their silence as a signal, the employee commenced the match. "The two of you may start as soon as the buzzer sounds off."
At the arena stage, Derek’s expression finally turned into a sly grin.
"Now that everything is final, I won’t pretend anymore. Little missy, I’m one of the top 100 combatants in this arena. Consider the 2,000 points you bet as a stern lesson to never overestimate yourself." He calmly said. His eyes were the gaze of a predator.
He anticipated Carmen to be either shocked or furious upon being tricked and deceived into participating in a high-stakes arena fight.
However, he was left disappointed and bewildered. Not only was Carmen not taken aback, but she was also expressing the gaze of a predator.
"Since you chose to be honest, then I’ll do the same. Sometimes, you might encounter someone who is even more shrewd than you. It’s best not to overthink oneself as the trapper." Carmen flashed a wicked grin.
Derek was about to say something, but the buzzer resounded at that moment.
Distracted for that split second, Carmen had already taken advantage and unleashed her Void Field.
Following afterward was a swarm of voidlings summoned by her.
As the voidlings received the buff from the Void Field, Carmen continued to unleash numerous spells to block off Derek’s escape path.
And thanks to the limited space in the arena, Derek quickly found himself trapped and surrounded.
"Fuck... I was the fat sheep." It was only now did Derek and the other spectators realized the fat sheep they thought to be was actually a terrifying demoness.
This wasn’t Derek tricking and scamming points from a newcomer.
Instead, this was the descent of the demoness, unleashing terror amongst everyone present at the arena.
"It’s a good thing we let Derek take the lead."
"He’s trying his best to defend, but those summoned creatures are just breaching his barrier."
"There’s no counterplay either. That woman shielded herself and kept her distance at an ideal position. Derek messed up because he wanted to talk and allowed the opponent to instantly take advantage of that small opening."
The spectators discussed among themselves and felt extremely relieved that they weren’t the ones on the stage.
Back on the stage, Derek’s appearance was very unsightly.
"Wait, let’s stop here. Give me a breather." Derek called out and tried to gain some mercy.
Unfortunately, it fell on deaf ears.
"Sorry, but you just have to endure it for a while," Carmen said lightly, her offense never stopping. Just like what Xu Feng had taught her, never be conceited or celebrate too early unless the deed was finalized.
A moment of carelessness could easily cause the situation to overturn.
’I wonder if the Guild Leader will be proud of my improvement.’ She wondered and watched as Derek got swarmed to death.
