Lian’s voice had a sharp edge now.

“Your point?”

Alister’s smile was cold, but his eyes gleamed as they narrowed into slits.

“My point is, a time is coming… a new age will soon fall upon this city. My dragons are immune to this mist, and they can take down whatever steps out of those gates. Soon, a time will arrive when this megacity will rest on my shoulders, because only I will have the power to ensure its safety.”

Lian was silent for a moment, as if weighing his words. Finally, she spoke, her tone more reserved. “And you expect me to believe that? What makes you think the city will let someone like you take control?”

Alister’s voice was calm but resolute. “It doesn’t matter whether they let me or not. The city will need someone who can protect it when the time comes, and I will be the one to provide that protection.”

Lian’s voice softened, but the amusement never left her tone. “Alister, I don’t think you’re a very good businessman,” she chuckled.

“If you’re going to offer everyone protection, then what do I have to worry about? Or are you saying that if I don’t do as you ask, you’ll let me die? You want to suddenly become some sort of tyrant? I doubt the union would allow that. You might even make an enemy out of the president.”

Alister let out a soft laugh, the tension in his shoulders easing for a moment. “I am an excellent businessman, Lian,” he replied smoothly. “And as for protection, you’re not exactly correct. Obviously, I could choose not to favor those who choose to be my enemies. But besides that, I can’t suddenly begin protecting everyone right away.”

Lian narrowed her eyes, her curiosity piqued. “What do you mean?”

Alister smiled, leaning back slightly against the edge of the rooftop. “You’re a businesswoman. I’m sure you understand how fickle people are. If I suddenly called out a bunch of dragons and began policing the entire Megacity, it would cause unrest. The talk would be—who am I to suddenly impose my will on everyone? People like the thought that they’re in control. So me suddenly showing up to take that control from them, without them handing it over… Let’s just say it could cause issues.”

Lian was quiet for a moment, then spoke, her voice thoughtful. “I see what you’re going for. The people need to experience the danger, realize that their former protectors are no longer in a position to secure their safety. And once you’ve displayed your abilities, and the fact that your dragons can ensure a newly faced heaven, they will naturally accept it.”

Alister’s smile widened, his eyes gleaming with approval. “Exactly.”

Lian’s voice was thoughtful, but her tone gave away a trace of admiration.

“This is actually a very solid plan, Alister,” she said. “But you still haven’t answered the last part—what will you do about the Union? I doubt they’ll just let you take over, or are you planning to get rid of them and make an enemy of the president, the famed strongest human on the planet?”

Alister’s eyes narrowed, a confident smirk tugging at his lips. “The Union won’t be a problem. After all, the Union president… is my father, so technically and legally, all the megacities are properties that will be under my inheritance. So I have nothing to worry about, they will support me.”

Lian paused, her voice suddenly becoming sharp, filled with skepticism. “Alister, do you expect me to believe such an obvious lie?”

Alister chuckled, a cold edge to his smile. “Find a way to contact the branch president. Tell him I sent you. I’m sure he’ll be able to confirm my claims.”

Lian’s laughter filled the line. “Oh well, let’s pick this up later at lunch, then. That is, if your claims are true. I’ll be arriving with the item as you requested.”

As their deal was finalized, the sound of the rooftop door creaking open caught Alister’s attention. Lila had arrived, stepping into view.

Alister glanced over at her before returning his attention to Lian. “It would be nice if you specified a location.”

Lian’s chuckle echoed through the line. “I’ll text it to you soon. Bye-bye.”

And with that, the call ended.

Alister turned around fully, facing Lila with a softened expression. “Are you done with all the documents?” he asked.

She hesitated, her fingers tightening around her shoulder as she folded her arms. “Yeah… I finished everything. I also specified when the burial will happen,” she said, though her voice made it clear she was still processing all this.

Alister nodded slowly. “I see. If you want to take a break from guild duty, I can understand—”

But Lila suddenly took a deep breath, cutting him off. “Alister, I have something I want to tell you.”
