Chapter 2238: Operation Dreaded Winter -Part 26"…" Jin stared at the magic crystal for a moment before he sighed as the King of Ends continued to put his head on the ground asking for forgiveness. "They will be handled as prisoners of war for the transgression you made for pointing your army at us."
Even though it sounded bad, at the very least Ress was going to rescue the remaining citizens of the Southern Kingdom Alliance. The King of Ends was not stupid either. He knew that he had not shot at Ress yet but the war was not concluded ever since Ends as well as the other kingdoms took a potshot at Jin and his army. So, the King of Ress was not wrong to take them in as prisoners of war if they were to enter his city.
The only thing he did not know was that the initial wave of people who ran into Ress had the fortune to not be made or labelled as prisoners because they flee, denouncing their citizenship from Ends. This was different, it was an announcement made by the king himself to evacuate the entirety of Ends as the two kingdoms were technically still under war.
However, if one would to think rationally, this was still a benefit for the people of Ends despite having the short stick of the bargain. If they were taken in as prisoners of war, they could still have a meal or two for the day rather than being stuck as refugees who could potentially have nothing on their hands, off to survive on their own without any protection.
Of course, the King of Ends had no idea how Ress had dealt with their portion of refugees since all the refugees taken in were converted into citizens and none of them reported back. Ends assumed that those refugees had been killed by either the demons or became collateral damage from the war against the beings from above.
Thus, the King of Ends thanked profusely to Jin and immediately tell the remaining few royal messengers under his command to spread the news that Ress would be immediately sending their troops over to aid them in the condition of the citizens being the prisoners of war. And as absurd as the messages sounded, the royal messengers sent the message out word for word to the defending generals in the event that they heard or misinterpret the message wrongly.
Even though they felt offended that Ress had gave such a ridiculous offer of an olive branch for peace, the generals knew that it was better than nothing. Better than being killed and slaughtered meaninglessly in this city where hope could not be seen. But conveying the message to the citizens would be a tremendously difficult task.
They knew that they would not be able to listen or understand why Ress was doing this, or why they had to be in chains just to continue to survive. Some even reacted, stating that they rather die than have their pride wounded by Ress or have them as their saviours. It was pretty obvious that the King of Ends' internal propaganda about Ress was extremely effective and some of the citizens and peasants even thought that this was a way to rouse the people's pride by the King.
And though the majority had thought that way, there were others who finally see that this was more than just about pride. This was to make sure that they could survive for the future and nothing else. So, a minority of the citizens decided to take the escape route prepared by the soldiers and Ress did kept their word.
Experience more on empireWhen the peasants came out of the escape tunnel, Ress Rifle Mages were already there pointing their Wand Rifles at the people, telling them to surrender or suffer the consequences. Most who had already resigned to such a fate when they entered the tunnels immediately raised their hands up so that they could be chained up and to be escorted but there was still a few who were determined to pull through their king's ideology and propaganda. Those took their swords out and rushed towards the enemy without any care for their lives. Such offenders were instantly taken out by the Rifle Mages and more shouting emerged from the Rifle Mages to either lie flat on the ground to prove their innocence or be shot.
It was an extremely heated situation and perhaps an unnecessary move by Jin but the King of Ress was doing this not because he wanted it. In fact, he would not mind the extra manpower that Ends would give. He can also brainwash them again but it is the people of Ress he had to answer for. They were clearly unhappy that there were media reports of the Southern Kingdom Alliance pointing their sword and spears at them.
After what they had done to save this world they lived in, the sacrifices made to fight against the Celestial Beings as well as defending the world from Demons, they were rather satisfied to hear that the Demon Hordes were carving up the Southern Kingdom Alliance for being ungrateful. Naturally, not all felt the same but the people who were the most vocal always wins.
So, by doing this, they could see that their King still had the balls to play on the political field and not just the battlefield. However, Jin had already made plans to rehabilitate them (more like Mr Devil Fox brainwashing them) and ensure that they would get integrated into their current society once more.
So as sad as it sounds, while Ends was grateful for the evacuation of the citizens who were willing to go, the defenders of Ress merely stood guard to ensure that orders from their King took precedence instead of helping Ends to keep the demons at bay. That said, the Demons had already made significant progress, defeated the front liners and even destroyed a portion of the fortress wall.
However, the sacrifice of the frontlines was not in vain as the fortress wall extended its tentacles to grab any dead bodies for nourishment to repair any damages that it had. The only problem is that the Demons already learn its tricks and it was just a short matter of time the wall defending the city would crumble down especially when the entirety of the Demon Horde was going on a rampage.
