Chapter 2239: Operation Dreaded Winter -Part 27"The walls are down." The messenger was sweating in beads when he read out the message to his King but it was pretty obvious from where he was standing and viewing the battlefield, the King was not dumb until he could not see that his entire wall went crumbling down.
In fact, he could not believe that the Demon Horde was indeed able to bring the wall down within the day. That was because the humans were banging on the fact that the Demons was calculative based on its movements and how the surviving scouts had previously retrieved the information according to the towns they had transverse.
It was too clean. Way too clean even for the humans who were warring previously with each other. That was why the mages and generals had assumed that the strategists behind the Demon Horde would not be stupid to waste their units and manpower so their living fortress wall could withstand their assault for days, perhaps weeks.
And that was what had happened for the first few hours when the Demon Rats and Goblins attempted to fight against the frontliners. Never did they expect that the Demon Horde would suddenly abandon all forms of military discipline and march for the walls with every single unit that they possessed. Discover more stories at empire
By doing so, the Living Fortress Wall was unable to process the immense amount of goblins and orcs attempting to climb up the Fortress Walls. Its consumption rate had a standard cycle and the Demon Horde had decided to use this as part of their advantage.
Not only that, Trolls and Giants were also being called upon to the frontlines …in fact, they were being hurled by Mages in the Demon Horde through mass telekinesis and thrown towards the wall like a trebuchet throwing a live burning pig. The only difference was that this 'animal' was the trolls and giants who crashed into the living fortress walls. As much as the walls tried to gobble the giants and trolls, they were able to regenerate fast enough to crash the remaining portion of the place.
Even the mages on the walls were not able to deflect a huge ass flying giant coming towards their direction and all they could do was pray that they would be flattened immediately. They do not wish to be collaterals or even be partially alive for this because they know the defenders know that surviving such a crash was not a blessing but torture.
Soon, the Demon Horde knows that the living fortress wall is unable to keep up with its consumption and they slaughter freely against any human they see or find. The rest of the defenders were attempting to withdraw and organise themselves, only to find themselves being trapped by the obstacles they created for themselves and the Demon Hordes took care of them all too easy.
In no time, the Goblins and the more agile Demons were able to climb the roofs and defeat any archers that were stationed in higher vantage points. Both human and Demon mages were casting various offensive and support spells against each other, with the former knowing that their time was limited with such a rampage.
Each whisper, each word that came out from their mouths needed to be decisive and there was no time for any mistakes. For each fumble would cause either the death of their comrades or maybe even themselves. The King who saw the destruction right in front of them knew that he did the right thing to get the citizens to be evacuated. As much as it pained him that they would be taken in as prisoners of war, there was also no guarantee that Ress could destroy such a massive Demon Horde. All his elites were squashed without any mercy and their desperate attempts to retaliate had been taken away ever so easily by overwhelming numbers.
He believed that if they were given the chance for a one to one battle, they might have taken down more demons than they could have right now but that was a situation that would never ever happen. Right now, it felt like the gates of hell had been broken and his kingdom would be swallowed by nightfall.
"Ready the mages to send a large scale-" Before the King could relay that message to the Generals through his messenger, it seemed like the mages within the inner quarters had already taken the initiative to do so. But just like Trin and other cities, the anti magical barrier emerged in time and coincided with the activation of those large spells, rendering them ineffective against the Demon Horde.
"…" The King was speechless. He did not have the experience nor information that the Demons were capable of doing such a feat. He leaned near the rails and felt that suicide at this point would have been a mercy for him. But at the same time, he also felt that it was a waste to do that. If he could at least kill one demon or two, that also means that his citizens under Ress's care would have one less demon to worry about.
Simultaneously, his emotions were conflicted since there was no way he could harbour such hope. All he had been hearing were hearsays, there was no concrete proof that Ress was all powerful and capable of defeating such a horde.
However, as if his thoughts were being announced aloud, he suddenly saw two batches of humans flying towards the Demon Horde. It not only managed to zoom passed the Royal Palace of Ends but also evade the flying Wyrms that dominated the skies. There was no way they were his mages nor the Southern Kingdom Alliance's elites. None were proficient in such movement and if they did, they would have been bragged all around the alliance.
In short, one could only assume that they were from Ress.
His heart skipped a beat the moment the King saw how the Rifle Mages got into formation at such high altitude and each of their 'wands' suddenly spotted a bright shiny light. The Demon Horde tried to do the same by using the anti magical barrier but before it could activate, the shots from the rumour Rifle Mages were already out, sending multiple explosions that killed the giants and trolls in the blink of an eye.
He grasped at the Rifle Mages falling because of the activation of the anti magic barrier but in less than five seconds while they were free falling, the equipment reactivated again, enabling them to return to base. At the same time, it felt as if one of the Rifle Mages was approaching the King of Ends and the elegance from flying such a dangerous route bedazzled him for the moment.
"This is all we will do for you. Any more, and our King will notice." The female Rifle Mage who seemed to be a high ranking officer/knight said. "He would not be happy that we provided support for you especially after what you have done."
That was when the King realised that the Rifle Mage had a southern accent in her tone and instantly understood what she meant. She was merely doing her part as a former citizen of the Southern Kingdoms.
"Rest assured those prisoner of wars would be taken care of." The female Rifle Mage said as she flew off, leaving them to the soldiers of Ends to their dreaded fate. But that simple act of bringing down multiple giants and trolls in one go had inspired the humans in this particular battle. They now know that their fight was not in vain for there were humans way stronger than them protecting their citizens.
So, they will do their part to ensure that the evacuation would be successful to those who wish to escape and stand their ground as long as possible.
